A Verse About Love in the Quran

“We created you from a male and a female, and (divided) you into (large) peoples and tribes, so that you might recognize one another.” (Surah Al-Hujurat 49:13) This means we were created in different groups so that we may better understand each other and ourselves. It also implies that we are all fundamentally equal.

   “It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. When he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord, ‘If You should give us a good [child], we will surely be among the grateful.’” — Surah Al-A'raf 7:189

   • Arabic: هُوَ الَّذِىۡ خَلَقَكُمۡ مِّنۡ نَّـفْسٍ وَّاحِدَةٍ وَّجَعَلَ مِنۡهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ اِلَيۡهَا​ ۚ فَلَمَّا تَغَشّٰٮهَا حَمَلَتۡ حَمۡلًا خَفِيۡفًا فَمَرَّتۡ بِهٖ​ ۚ فَلَمَّاۤ اَثۡقَلَتۡ دَّعَوَا اللّٰهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَـئِنۡ اٰتَيۡتَـنَا صَالِحًا لَّـنَكُوۡنَنَّ مِنَ الشّٰكِرِيۡنَ‏
   • Pronunciation: Huwalladhi khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin waja'ala minha zawjaha liyas-kuna ilayha, falamma taghashshaha hamalat hamlan khafifan famarrat bihi, falamma ath-qalat da'awallah rabahuma la-in ataytana salihan lanakununna minash-shakireen.
   • What it means: This verse describes the creation of humanity from a single soul, and how every soul must find its mate, also known as a naseeb (“destiny”). It follows the path of love, marriage, and pregnancy until soulmates who are husband and wife can welcome a good child.

   • Pronunciation: Ya ayyuha an-nasu inna khalaqnakum min dhakarin wa ontha wa ja'alnakum shu'uban wa qabaa'ila lita'arafu. Inna akramakum 'inda Allah atqakum. Inna Allah 'aleemun khabeer.
   • What it means: This can be interpreted as stating how all humanity is equally split into one male and one female. Whether as soulmates, partners, or companions in faith, love between all peoples works because of mutual cooperation and respect.

   “O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.” — Surah An-Nisa:1

   • Pronunciation: Ya ayyuha an-nasu ittaqoo rabbakumu allathee khalaqakum min nafsin wahidatin wakhalaqa minha zawjaha wabaththa minhuma rijalan katheeran wanisaan waittaqoo Allaha allathee tasaaloona bihi waalarhama inna Allaha kana AAalaykum raqeeban.
   • What it means: This verse recalls how Eve was created for Adam to ease his loneliness and bring him peace. It focuses on how Adam and Eve were the first soulmates who praised God for and with each other.

Section 2 of 5:

Quran Verses on Love & Marriage

1.

   “No two persons love each other for the sake of Allah but that the better of the two is the one with the strongest love for his companion.” — Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 571

   • Arabic: مَا تَحَابَّ اثْنَانِ فِي اللَّهِ إِلا كَانَ أَفْضَلَهُمَا أَشَدُّهُمَا حُبًّا لِصَاحِبِهِ
   • Pronunciation: Mā taḥābba ithnāni fī Allāhi illā kāna afḍaluhumā ashadduhumā ḥubban liṣāḥibihi.
   • What it means: The verse discusses how, when 2 people love each other for the sake of Allah, whoever loves their companion more intensely and purely is the better of the 2. However, one loves for the other’s sake, so their joined love is a selfless and powerful form of love.

   “And (also) of His Signs is that He created for you mates of your own kind so that you acquire peace from them, and He created between you love and mercy. Verily in this (system of creation) there are Signs for those who meditate.” — Surah Ar-Rum (30:21)

   • Arabic: وَمِنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓ أَنۡ خَلَقَ لَكُم مِّنۡ أَنفُسِكُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا لِّتَسۡكُنُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهَا وَجَعَلَ بَيۡنَكُم مَّوَدَّةٗ وَرَحۡمَةًۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
   • Pronunciation: Wa min aayatiheee an khalaqa lakum min anfusikum azwaajal litaskunooo ilaihaa wa ja'ala bainakum mawaddatanw wa rahmah; inna fee zaalika la Aayaatil liqawminy yatafakkaroon.
   • What it means: These words offer Allah’s guidance about romantic love between a husband and wife. Like many duas for marriage, the verse focuses on the love, respect, kindness, and companionship that are so important in a marriage.

   “They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them.” — Ayah al-Baqarah 2:187

   • Arabic: هُنَّ لِبَاسٌۭ لَّكُمْ وَأَنتُمْ لِبَاسٌۭ لَّهُنَّ
   • Pronunciation: Hunna libasun lakum, wa-antum libasun lahunna.
   • What it means: In this verse, Allah describes a marriage between a man and a woman as a garment they share. Each person “wears” the garment of the other as a symbol for sharing joy and challenges. If one person has imperfections, the other can “cover them up with the garment” to protect them.

   “Waiving [your right] is nearer to godliness, so do not forget kindness towards one another: God sees what you do.” — Quran 2:237

   • Arabic: وَأَن تَعْفُوٓا۟ أَقْرَبُ لِلتَّقْوَىٰ ۚ وَلَا تَنسَوُا۟ ٱلْفَضْلَ بَيْنَكُمْ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ
   • Pronunciation: Wa an ta'fu aqrabu lil-taqwa. Wa la tansawu al-fadla baynakum. Inna Allaha bima ta'maloona baseer.
   • What it means: Even when disagreements arise within a relationship or marriage, it’s important to remain kind to each other, because God sees all things.

   “The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoy what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, give zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. For those, Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” — Surah Tawbah 9:71

   • Arabic: وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ أُوْلَئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ اللَّهُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ
   • Pronunciation: Wa al-mu'minūna wa al-mu'minātu baʿḍuhum awliyā'u baʿḍ(in). Ya'murūna bi al-maʿrūfi wa yanhauna ʿan al-munkari wa yuqīmūna aṣ-ṣalāta wa yu'tūna az-zakāta wa yuṭīʿūna Allaha wa Rasūlahu. Ula'ika sayarḥamuhumu Allah. Inna Allaha ʿazīzun ḥakīm(un).
   • What it means: The verse speaks to how a husband and wife are allies in a partnership when they get married. They can mutually support each other’s success and spiritual growth through love, respect, and shared values.

   “And there is no blame upon you for that to which you indirectly allude concerning a proposal to women.” — Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:235

   • Arabic: ولا جناح عليكم فيما عرضتم به من خطبة النساء
   • Pronunciation: Wa lā junāḥa ʿalaykum fīmā ʿarraḍtum bihi min khiṭbati an-nisā.’

   • Arabic: ٱلرِّجَالُ قَوَّٰمُونَ عَلَى ٱلنِّسَآءِ بِمَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ وَبِمَآ أَنفَقُواْ مِنْ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ ۚ فَٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتُ قَٰنِتَٰت حَٰفِظَٰتٌ لِّلْغَيْبِ بِمَا حَفِظَ ٱللَّهُ
   • Pronunciation: Al-rijālu qawwāmūna ʿalā l-nisāi bimā faḍḍala l-lahu baʿḍahum ʿalā baʿḍin wabimā anfaqū min amwālihim fal-ṣāliḥātu qānitātun ḥāfiẓātun lil'ghaybi bimā ḥafiẓa l-lahu wa-allātī takhāfūna nushūzahunna faʿiẓūhunna wa-uh'jurūhunna fī l-maḍājiʿi wa-iḍ'ribūhunna fa-in aṭaʿnakum falā tabghū ʿalayhinna sabīlan inna l-laha kāna ʿaliyyan kabīra.
   • What it means: Each spouse has their own role to play within a marriage. By supporting each other and their unique strengths, a husband and wife can enjoy a thriving partnership.

Section 3 of 5:

Quran Verses on God’s Love

1. 
   1
   “Those who loved each other for the sake of my glory will be in the shade of my throne, on a day there is no shade but mine.” — Musnad Aḥmad 16825

   • Arabic: أَيْنَ الْمُتَحَابُّونَ بِجَلَالِي الْيَوْمَ أُظِلُّهُمْ فِي ظِلِّي يَوْمَ لَا ظِلَّ إِلَّا ظِلِّي
   • Pronunciation: Ayy-na al-mutahabboona bijalali al-yawma uzhilluhum fi zhilliyy yawm la zhillun illa zhilliy.
   • What it means: This verse talks about how believers who love each other as an earthly means of showing love to Allah will receive a special reward on Judgement Day. God will give shade to those who love each other in the name of God.

   “Whatever you may differ about, its judgment is with Allah. That is Allah, my Lord. In Him, I have put my trust, and to Him do I turn penitently.” — Surah Ash-Shura 42:10

   • Arabic: وَمَا ٱخۡتَلَفۡتُمۡ فِيهِ مِن شَيۡءٍ۬ فَحُكۡمُهُۥٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِۚ ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبِّي عَلَيۡهِ تَوَكَّلۡتُ وَإِلَيۡهِ أُنِيبُ
   • Pronunciation: Wa mā ikhtalaftum fīhi min shay'in faḥukmuhu ilá Allāh; dhālikumu Allāhu rabbī, ʿalayhi tawakkaltu wa-ilayhi unīb.
   • What it means: Trust in Allah instead of others, because Allah’s love for humanity and His guidance and forgiveness matter above all things.

   “If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you even for your sins, Allah is all forgiving and all merciful.” — Surah Aal-Imran 3:31

   • Arabic: قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى يُحْبِبْكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌۭ رَّحِيمٌۭ
   • Pronunciation: Qul in kuntum tuḥibbūna-llāha fa-ttabiʿūnī yuḥbibkumu-llāhu wa-yaghfir lakum dhunūbakum, wa-llāhu ghafūrun raḥīm.
   • What it means: If believers in the Islamic faith want to experience the love of Allah, it’s required for them to obey the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Being sincere and accepting Islam paves the path to love within Islam.
   • Islam education expert Belal Elkadri notes that, in Islam, “God is always going to give to you. You just have to be the one who asks."

   “And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” — Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195

   • Arabic: وَأَنفِقُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَلَا تُلۡقُواْ بِأَيۡدِيكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلتَّهۡلُكَةِ وَأَحۡسِنُوٓاْۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ
   • Pronunciation: Wa anfiqū fī sabīli-llāhi wa lā tulqū bi-aydīkum ilá-t-tahlukati wa aḥsinū; inna-llāha yuḥibbu-l-muḥsinīn.
   • What it means: This verse focuses on Allah’s love for the people, and how He wishes that members of the faith show love towards one another through good deeds.

   “And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allah. And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allah and that Allah is severe in punishment.” — Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 165

   • Arabic: وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَندَادٗا يُحِبُّونَهُمۡ كَحُبِّ ٱللَّهِۖ وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ أَشَدُّ حُبّٗا لِّلَّهِۗ وَلَوۡ يَرَى ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوٓاْ إِذۡ يَرَوۡنَ ٱلۡعَذَابَ أَنَّ ٱلۡقُوَّةَ لِلَّهِ جَمِيعٗا وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ شَدِيدُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ
   • Pronunciation: Wa minan naasi mai yattakhizu min doonil laahi andaadai yuhibboonahum kahubbil laahi wallazeena aamanooo ashaddu hubbal lillah; wa law yaral lazeena zalamoo iz yarawnal ‘azaaba annal quwwata lillaahi jamee’anw wa annallaaha shadeedul ‘azaab.
   • What it means: While some people focus their love on objects or on being competitive with others, only those with true faith can love Allah completely. Those who do not love Allah with pure faith will endure punishment, while others consider their love for Allah to be the strongest possible love.

Section 4 of 5:

Quran Verses on Love Among People

1. 
   1
   “None of you has faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 13

   • Arabic: لَا يُؤْمِنُ أَحَدُكُمْ حَتَّى يُحِبَّ لِأَخِيهِ أَوْ قَالَ لِجَارِهِ مَا يُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِهِ
   • Pronunciation: La yu'minu ahadukum hatta yuhibba li-akhihi aw qala li-jarihi ma yuhibbu li-nafsihi.
   • What it means: This verse focuses on how important love between people is within the Islamic faith. It expresses how treating others the way you want to be treated is a central part of love for God and for humanity.

   “Spread peace and you will love one another. Beware of hatred, for it is the razor. I do not say that it shaves hair, but rather it shaves away the religion.” — Al-Adab al-Mufrad 260

   • Arabic: وَأَفْشُوا السَّلامَ تَحَابُّوا وَإِيَّاكُمْ وَالْبُغْضَةَ فَإِنَّهَا هِيَ الْحَالِقَةُ لا أَقُولُ لَكُمْ تَحْلِقُ الشَّعْرَ وَلَكِنْ تَحْلِقُ الدِّينَ
   • Pronunciation: Wa-afshus-salaama tahaabbu, wa iyyaakum wal-bughda, fa-innaha hiyal-haaliquh. La aqoolu lakum tahliqush-sha'r, wa laakin tahliq ad-deen.
   • What it means: This verse states how the Islamic faith needs its people to accept love and reject hatred. Hatred is destructive to one’s faith as a razor shaves hair. Believers can build faith and community through kindness and acts of love.

   “Still, there are some who take others as Allah’s equal—they love them as they should love Allah—but the believers love Allah even more.” — Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:165

   • Arabic: وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَتَّخِذُ مِن دُونِ اللَّهِ أَندَادًا يُحِبُّونَهُمْ كَحُبِّ اللَّهِ ۖ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَشَدُّ حُبًّا لِّلَّه
   • Pronunciation: Wa minan-nasi man yattakhidhu min dunillahi andadan yuhibbunahum ka-hubbillahi, walladhina amanu ashadd hubban lillahi.
   • What it means: Having and showing love for others doesn’t have to conflict with Allah’s love for humankind. If Muslims love each other for the sake of God, they can achieve the ultimate love.

Section 5 of 5:

Quran Verses on Affection & Mercy

1.

   “The believers are only brothers, so reconcile between your brothers, and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.” — Surat al-Hujurat 49:10

   • Arabic: إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
   • Pronunciation: Innamal mu'minūna ikhwatun fa-aṣliḥū bayna akhawaykum wattaqullāha la'allakum turḥamūn.
   • What it means: This verse speaks about how all Muslims are brothers and sisters that come together through faith, and do so by resolving conflicts easily, valuing unity through love, and having mercy for one another.

   “The parable of the believers in their affection, mercy, and compassion for each other is that of a body. When any limb aches, the whole body reacts with sleeplessness and fever.” — Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 5665

   • Arabic: مَثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فِي تَوَادِّهِمْ وَتَرَاحُمِهِمْ وَتَعَاطُفِهِمْ مَثَلُ الْجَسَدِ إِذَا اشْتَكَى مِنْهُ عُضْوٌ تَدَاعَى لَهُ سَائِرُ الْجَسَدِ بِالسَّهَرِ وَالْحُمَّى
   • Pronunciation: "Mathalu al-mu'minīna fī tawāddihim wa tarāḥumihim wa ta'āṭufihim mathalu al-jasadi idhā ishtakā minhu 'uḍwun tadā'ā lahū sā'iru al-jasadi bis-sahari wa al-ḥummā.
   • What it means: It emphasizes how much believers should be interconnected through their faith. By showing compassion and sympathy to one another, they act as a single body that might feel pain due to one of its limbs.

   • Arabic: وَرَحْمَتِي وَسِعَتْ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ
   • Pronunciation: Wa ramatī wasiat kulla shay.
   • What it means: This verse focuses on how all-encompassing and boundless Allah’s love for humanity is. Being compassionate and forgiving allows Him to provide for all people of faith through mercy and love.
   • Imam Mekaeel Mohsin suggests that the best way to feel closer to Allah’s love is "to connect yourself with Him by reading and trying to comprehend the Quran. Then, apply and attribute it to our daily lives."
