Depends on the bike. Really, you can use any gear so long as you keep mid-range revs at a comfortable speed. Don't let it stall.
  • Question
Which of the hands should hold the motorbike more firmly when starting to move? I sometimes over rev the motorbike when attempting to move.
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
Both hands should hold the motorcycle. To move off one-handed would make the bike unstable.

Hopefully you drained the gas before storing it. If you did, fresh gas and priming the carb should be sufficient (you may not have to prime the carb, but if it's hard starting, try starter fluid). If you did not and the gas is still there, then you have some work to do. First, see if it starts; if it does, you're lucky. If it doesn't, then chances are the gas has gummed up and it's time for some cleaning. Start by emptying the gas tank and carb. From here you can either clean it, rebuild it or replace it.
  • Question
When I start the bike by leaving the clutch in, is it necessary to accelerate?

    Community Answer
Accelerating might be helpful, as it will get the engine running efficiently once there's a spark for the engine to start. It will also increase the fuel supply, which will enhance the conditions for starting. (You don't need to keep the accelerating before releasing clutch; once the clutch is released and there's sign of fusion in the engine, apply accelerator.)
  • Question
How do I stop the engine from turning off while the motorcycle is in neutral?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
When the engine is cold, choke the engine and let it idle for about 5 minutes or until the engine is warm and then take the choke off.
  • Question
Is it safe to the engine to start a motorcycle while on the first gear and holding the clutch at the same time?
    Tyler Harlan

    Community Answer
As long as you make sure you're holding the clutch in firmly, yes. The clutch disengages the engine from the transmission, meaning that there is no load on the engine when you try and start it. It is safe as long as you have the clutch held in.
  • Question
Is it okay to start my motorcycle in first gear?
    Vicki Gray

    Community Answer
It's okay to start a motorcycle in first gear, but it's not recommended since it's less safe than starting in neutral. Many motorcycle brands prevent engine turnover in first gear as a safety measure. If you start in first gear and become distracted, the motorcycle could move unexpectedly. It's best to start in neutral and keep your right foot on the right peg with the rear brake engaged and your left foot on the ground to maintain control.
  • Question
Do motorcycles have a neutral gear?
    Nathan VM

    Community Answer
Yes, most motorcycles have a neutral gear. It is typically located between first and second gear. When shifting your foot through the gears, you will usually feel a half-click when moving from first to second, which indicates neutral.
  • Question
In which gear should I be when turning?

    Community Answer
The gear you should be in when turning depends on your speed. For instance, if you are turning after a stop sign, you would likely be in first or second gear. However, if you are taking a turn on a highway, you would maintain your speed and likely stay in a higher gear, such as fourth, fifth, or sixth.
