If you're in the same room as the router or the next room over, the 5.0 GHz network will give you the fastest connection. If there are a lot of walls between you and the router, the 2.4 GHz network is probably better.

Upgrading your router can boost your speed if your old one is especially old or if it is not designed to go as fast as the internet that you pay for. But you have to go through the modem. The modem is the thing that tells your ISP that you are paying for your internet. If you don't connect through the modem, you won't be able to access the internet.
