I have a journal app that I want to transfer to a new phone but everything I try doesn't transfer the contents that I wrote, just the app. Is there any way to transfer the contents also?

To transfer every content from that app, have a backup application. You can download one for free from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Also, to backup all the files, your phone has to be rooted.
