Posting images to Instagram in a grid or carousel format makes it so that multiple smaller images join together to create a larger image when people view your profile. There are several websites you can use to split an image into a grid or carousel. You can also use a mobile app to do it. This wikiHow article teaches you how to split an image into a grid or carousel and post it to Instagram on your Android, iPhone, iPad, or computer.

Quickly Split Instagram Images

  1. Open PhotoSplit or a different image splitter site.
  2. Upload the image you want to split.
  3. Select a square or portrait format.
  4. Select a grid or carousel format.
  5. Split and download the image.
  6. Post the images to Instagram one at a time.

Using PhotoSplit

  1. You can download PhotoSplit from the Google Play Store (Android) or App Store (iPhone or iPad). The free version of this app allows you to make unlimited carousel images (2x1 or 3x1). However, it only gives you two grid images before requiring you to upgrade to Pro.
    • PhotoSplit is a highly rated and popular app on both app stores.[1] [2]
    • You can search "PhotoSplit for Instagram" in the search bar at the top of the page (Google Play Store) or in the search tab at the bottom of your screen (App Store). The app is developed and offered by Tech Positive.
  2. This app icon looks like a grid with a purple, pink, and blue gradient. You'll find this app on one of your Home screens, in the app drawer, or by searching.

  3. It’s the purple button in the center of the screen. It’s right below the “PhotoSplit” title.
    • If this is your first time using the app, you'll be asked if you want to watch the tutorial. You can either tap Watch or Skip.
    • You'll need to allow permission for the app to access your photos, media, and files.
  4. You'll see a list of the recent images on your phone; you can tap the three-line menu icon to see a list of other locations where you might have photos saved, like your Google Drive folder.
  5. Along the bottom of your screen, you'll see 2x1, 3x1, 3x2, 3x3, and 3x4 grids that you can create out of your picture; when you tap one, you'll see the preview of your photo grid in the space above.
    • Remember that the free version, without paying for the pro version of the app, can only split and post a 2x1 or a 3x1 image.
    • Move, zoom, and rotate the photo in the middle of your screen to get it exactly how you want it to show up on your Instagram. Use your fingers to move and zoom in or out of the photo; use the icons on either side of your screen to rotate your photo.[3]
    • You can also tap Portrait or Square to change the aspect ratio of the photo.
  6. You'll see this with the icon of a checkmark in the top right of your screen.
  7. It’s in the window that pops up when splitting the image. This opens Instagram on your phone.
  8. In order to get the pictures to appear on your profile in the grid format, you’ll need to post each image one at a time, starting with the first image, in the lower-right corner of the grid. Then you’ll need to move left and post each additional image, starting with the bottom row, and moving from right to left, and bottom to top.
    • To post an image to Instagram, tap the plus (+) icon in the upper-right corner and select Post at the bottom of the screen. Select an image and tap Next in the upper-right corner. Add music, text, an overlay, or a filter, and tap Next in the lower-right corner. Write a caption and tap Share at the bottom of the screen.
    • Adding an additional post to Instagram will disrupt the grid formation on your profile. You can preserve the grid formation by posting three posts at a time or posting only grid images.

  1. Go to the CarouselMaker image splitter website. You can use any web browser on your computer or mobile device. This website allows you to upload an image and split it into a grid formation to upload to Instagram.
  2. It’s in the center of the screen. This allows you to select an image to split into a grid or Carousel format.
  3. If you are using a mobile device, tap an image you want to split into a grid format. If you are using a computer, navigate to the image you want to split into a grid format and click Open.
  4. Square will split the images into perfect square shapes. Portrait splits the image into tall image portraits.
    • “Grid” splits the image into a grid format with multiple columns and rows.
    • “Carousel” splits the image horizontally into multiple columns.
    • “Custom” allows you to specify the exact number of rows and columns you want to split the image into.
  5. Click one of the circle icons to select a margin color for your image.
    • If you don’t want to add a margin to your image, be sure to uncheck the checkbox next to “Add margins to Grid preview.”
  6. By default, the image will be split into three columns. If you want more or fewer, you can enter the number of columns you want to split the image into in the box below “Columns.”
  7. This generates a preview of how the image will be split.
  8. This downloads all the split images as a ZIP file.
  9. You can find the ZIP file in your Downloads folder. Unzip the file to retrieve the split images.
  10. To get the photos to appear on your Instagram profile in the grid format, you’ll need to post each image one at a time, starting with the first image, in the lower-right corner of the grid. Then you’ll need to move left and post each additional image, starting with the bottom row, and moving from right to left, and bottom to top.
    • To post an image to Instagram on mobile, tap the plus (+) icon in the upper-right corner and select Post at the bottom of the screen. Select an image and tap Next in the upper-right corner. Add music, text, an overlay, or a filter, and tap Next in the lower-right corner. Write a caption and tap Share at the bottom of the screen.
    • To post an image using a web browser, log in to Instagram. Click Create in the menu bar to the left, and select Post. Click Select from computer. Select the image you want to upload and click Open. Click Next at the top. Select a filter or enhancement and click Next at the top. Write a caption and click Share.
    • Adding an additional post to Instagram will disrupt the grid formation on your profile. You can preserve the grid formation by posting three posts at a time or posting only grid images.
