Do you want to become a master Minecraft brewer and use your skills to churn out speedy Potions of Swiftness? We’ll show you how! To make the potion, you'll first need to make and equip a Brewing Stand (if you haven’t already). Once you have a brewing stand, you can make the potion by combining a Water Bottle with Sugar and Nether Wart. In this in-depth guide, you’ll learn how to brew Potions of Swiftness step by step—plus all of the different variants and enhanced versions.

Quick Steps for Making a Potion of Swiftness

  1. Gather one Nether Wart, one Sugar, and one Water Bottle.
  2. Add Blaze Powder to the top-left box of the Brewing Stand.
  3. Place the Water Bottle in one of the bottom three Brewing Stand boxes.
  4. Place the Nether Wart in the top Brewing Stand box.
  5. Place the Sugar in the top Brewing Stand box (where the Nether Wart was).
  6. Equip the newly-made Potion of Swiftness in your inventory.

Gather the necessary ingredients for a Potion of Swiftness. To brew a Potion of Swiftness in Minecraft, you’ll need the following: one Nether Wart, one Sugar, and one Water Bottle. You’ll also need Blaze Power to operate the Brewing Stand.[1]
    • Nether Wart can be found inside Nether fortresses and bastions, and can be mined with any tool.
    • Sugar can be crafted using Sugar Cane or a Honey Bottle. Witches also have a chance of dropping it when defeated.
    • Water Bottles can be obtained by filling empty glass bottles with water.
  2. Open your Brewing Stand and place one Blaze Powder inside the box in the top-left corner of the menu; this will activate your Brewing Stand.
    • Need to make Blaze Power? Open the crafting menu and place a Blaze Rod in the center square. Then, just add the resulting Blaze Powder to your inventory.

  3. This will make it the container for your Potion of Swiftness. You can place up to three bottles in these boxes.
  4. This will begin the brewing process! You should see the bubbles to the left and the arrow to the right of the box turning white to indicate that the brewing process is underway. At the end of the brewing process, you’ll have an Awkward Potion (which has no effects and serves as the base for the Potion of Swiftness).
  5. Once the Nether Wart is done brewing, add the Sugar to the top box (where the Nether Wart was originally) to complete the brewing process. Once the potion is done, you’ll hear a “glug, glug, glug” sound, and the sugar will disappear. In what was once a Water Bottle, you’ll have a Potion of Swiftness![2]
  6. From here, you can take the potion out of whichever bottom box it was in and place it in your inventory.[3]
    • Effect: A Potion of Swiftness can increase your speed, jump distance, and FOV by 20% (6.73 meters per second while sprinting) for 3 minutes.
    • If you want to modify the potion to give you a longer duration (or extra effects), see our guide below!

Items to Brew Using a Potion of Swiftness

  1. Combine a Potion of Swiftness and one Redstone Dust to create an enhanced potion that lasts longer than the original! In your Brewing Stand menu, simply place the Potion of Swiftness in one of the bottom boxes; then, place the Redstone Dust in the top box above. When the brewing process is complete, you’ll have a Potion of Swiftness (8:00 - Speed).[4]
    • Effect: This potion will increase your speed, jump distance, and FOV by 20% for 8 minutes.
  2. Combine a Potion of Swiftness with one Glowstone Dust to create a Potion of Swiftness II, with enhanced speed. Place the Potion of Swiftness in one of the three bottom boxes of the Brewing Stand Menu, and the Glowstone Dust in the top box. After the brewing process, your Potion of Swiftness II will be ready.[5]
    • Effect: This potion will increase your speed, jump distance, and FOV by 40% for 1 minute and 30 seconds.
  3. Combine a Potion of Swiftness and one Gunpowder. In Minecraft, any potion can be upgraded into a Splash Potion; for this one, place a normal Potion of Swiftness in one of the three bottom boxes of the Brewing Stand, and the Gunpowder in the top box. This will create a Splash Potion of Swiftness.[6]
    • Effect: This potion can be thrown at a player or mob; it grants a 20% boost to speed, jump distance, and FOV for 3 minutes (or 2 minutes, 15 seconds in Bedrock).
  4. Like Splash Potions, any potion can be given the Lingering effect in Minecraft. To make a Lingering Potion of Swiftness, combine one Potion of Swiftness and one Dragon’s Breath, placing the potion in one of the bottom three brewing menu boxes and the Dragon’s Breath in the top box.[7]
    • Effect: When thrown, this potion will leave a cloud for 2 minutes that grants the Speed effect—specifically, a 20% boost to speed, jump distance, and FOV.
  5. Combine a Potion of Swiftness with one Fermented Spider Eye. In the brewing menu, place the Potion of Swiftness in one of the bottom three boxes. Then, place the Fermented Spider Eye in the top box. This will create a Potion of Slowness.
    • Effect: This potion will reduce your speed by 15% for 1 minute and 30 seconds.

Making & Opening a Brewing Stand in Minecraft

  1. When you open Minecraft’s Crafting menu, you’ll see a 3x3 grid with an arrow and a separate box against a gray background. In this menu, place 1 Blaze Rod in the first row’s second box, then place 3 Cobblestones in the second row. Once the ingredients are in place, the Brewing Stand will appear in the single box to the right![8]
    • All crafting items must be arranged in this order to make a Brewing Stand. If they aren’t, then they won’t create a Brewing Stand.
  2. Once you’ve assembled the Brewing Stand, you can move it to your Inventory and equip it for brewing potions like the Potion of Swiftness. It’s that simple!
  3. Your hotbar is a row of squares along the bottom of your screen; it lets you use assigned items quickly, rather than having to open your Inventory. Move the Brewing Stand into your hotbar; then you can easily place it on a random block on the ground.
  4. Select the Brewing Stand in your hotbar, then move your cursor (plus sign) to the empty block where you want to place your Brewing Stand and do one of the following actions:
    • Java Edition, Windows: Right-click on the empty block
    • Pocket Edition: Tap on the empty block
    • Xbox Consoles: Press the LT button
    • PlayStation Consoles: Press the L2 button
    • Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL button
  5. Once you’ve opened the Brewing Stand, you’ll see a menu with a box to the left, along with one box at the top connected to three boxes below. The three lower boxes are for placing bottles, and the top box is for ingredients! If you aren’t sure how to open your Brewing Stand, you just need to stand in front of it and select it using one of the following keys or buttons:[9]
    • Java Edition, Windows: Right-click on the Brewing Stand
    • Pocket Edition: Tap on the Brewing Stand
    • Xbox Consoles: Press the LT button
    • PlayStation Consoles: Press the L2 button
    • Nintendo Switch: Press the ZL button
