Do you want to know how people add links to a specific time in the comments of YouTube videos? It’s really easy to do so. Doing so helps the video creator by adding better navigation and retention. It can also show in Google searches, which improves the SEO. This wikiHow article teaches you how to comment on a timestamp in the comments section of a YouTube video. As a bonus, we’ll also teach you how to share a video with a timestamp outside of YouTube.
Steps
-
Open YouTube. You can either use the YouTube mobile app or you can go to youtube.com in a web browser.
- You need to be logged in to comment on YouTube. If you aren’t logged in, click or tap Sign In and log in with the Google account associated with your YouTube account.
-
Navigate to a video. This should be a video on which you wish to leave a comment. You can do so in a couple of different ways:[1]
- You can tap the magnifying glass icon in the mobile app or click the search bar at the top of the website. Enter video or channel name. Click or tap the video you want to comment on.
- Alternatively, you can click or tap a video on your home screen, or you can search for videos within your subscriptions.

Click or tap the video to pause it, then look at the time. You should pause the video at the point you wish to link. You'll see the time stamp in the bottom-left corner of the video section in hours:minutes:seconds format.[2]
- For example, if you paused the video one minute and thirty seconds in, you'll see "1:30" in the bottom-left corner of the window.
-
Scroll down and tap Comments (Mobile only). To view all the comments on the mobile app, scroll down and tap Comments below the video.
-
Click or tap the Add a comment box. On the mobile app, it will appear at the bottom of the screen. On a desktop computer, it will appear above the list of comments.
-
Type the timestamp exactly as it appears in the video. Doing so will automatically create a link to that point in the video when you post your comment.[3]
- For the previous example, you might type "Hey, what happened at 1:30?" to call attention to your paused point.
-
Click Comment or tap . If you are using the mobile app, tap the icon that resembles a paper airplane next to the comment box. On a desktop, click the blue box that says “Comment.” This will post your comment with the timestamp link.

Click the checkbox next to “Start at [timestamp].” It’s at the bottom of the share menu on a desktop computer.
- This option currently isn’t available on mobile devices, but you can still add a timestamp manually when you paste the link.

Click Copy or tap Copy link. This will copy the link to the video. If you are using a desktop computer, it will copy the video link with the timestamp. If you are using a mobile device, it will only copy the video link. You will need to add the timestamp manually.
-
Paste the link in a message. You can post it on a social media, message board, text message, email, or a text document.
-
Add the timestamp manually. If you are using a mobile device, you will need to add the timestamp at the end of the URL. To do so, add ?t= at the end of the URL, followed by the timestamp in seconds (i.e., “60” for 1 minute, “90” for 1:30).[4]
-
Share the link. When the person you share the link with clicks on it, it will open the video on YouTube at the moment of the timestamp in the URL.
