What Is a Patron Saint & How Do You Choose One?
Saints are holy people who are recognized for devoting their whole lives to God, good deeds, and adherence to traditional Christian values. These people are officially recognized as saints and declared by the Church in a process called canonization. Joan of Arc, for instance, is a historical figure who was declared a saint due to her unwavering faith and claims that she was being guided by God.
Patron saints, meanwhile, are saints who spiritually protect or guide certain things, people, or places. Saint Patrick, for instance, is the patron saint of Ireland. St. Cecilia, as another example, is the patron saint of musicians.
Some people also choose a patron saint for their own identities and lives. This patron saint is said to be their spiritual guardian and protector throughout their lives, or especially in a particular area of their lives.
You might choose a patron saint that you feel aligned with, look up to, or who you feel has something to teach you. Here are some other things to consider when choosing a patron saint:
1. Your birthday. Every saint has a “feast day,” so you might choose the saint whose feast day falls on your birthday. If your birthday is December 10th, for instance, your saint would be Our Lady of Loreto, the patron saint of aviators, fliers, pilots, and builders.
2. Your interests or hobbies. The things you like to do in your free time might draw you toward a particular saint. If you enjoy art, for example, you might choose St. Catherine of Bologna, a noted painter, poet, and musician who’s also the patron saint of artists.
3. Your job or vocation. Similar to hobbies and interests, your job or vocation might lead you to a relevant saint. Some patron saints look after specific career paths. If you are or want to be an accountant or banker, for instance, you might choose Saint Matthew, who is the patron saint of bookkeepers.
4. Your heritage. Certain saints are connected with specific countries, cities, races, or ethnicities. Saint Rose of Lima, for example, is the patron saint of Latin America, the Philippines, and the Americas. St. Benedict the Moor, as another example, is recognized as a patron saint of African-Americans.
5. The meaning of a saint’s name. Another way to find a patron saint is to find a saint whose name means something significant to you, especially because you might adopt your patron’s name as your own “saint name.” For example, maybe you want to strive for more courage in your life. You might choose Saint Bernadette Soubirous, whose name means “brave as a bear.”
