A foreigner could marry a Thai (or another foreigner in Thailand). Thailand's allure to foreigners as the perfect wedding locale could be from its pristine island beaches, the exotic jungle destinations, the colorful city, historic attractions, or perhaps the concept of the traditional Thai wedding. Apart from the wedding ceremony, here is how a foreigner can legally register for marriage in Thailand.

  1. This affidavit will state that you are free to marry.[1]
    • If the foreigner is marrying another foreigner, depending on the nationality each of the couple's country must issue an affidavit that states you are free to marry. Requirements to secure the affidavit depends on the nationality. Commonly, valid passport has to be presented. If you are divorced or a had previous marriage has been terminated by spousal death, the original copy of divorce or death certificate must be provided.
    • If the foreigner is marrying a Thai citizen, Thai National Identification Card and House Registration Document (blue book) is required.

  • Make sure that both parties meet the age requirement. Minimum age of marriage for Thai national is 17. Written parental consent is required if aged below 20 years. For the foreigner, whatever marriageable age in accordance to law enforced from his home country.
  • Documents in foreign languages (such as divorce decree) must be translated into English, at least.
