Here are some helpful tips if you’re planning on cutting your hair at home:
  • Start with clean, detangled hair.
  • If you have straight hair, cut your hair when it’s damp.
  • If you have curly hair, cut your hair when it’s dry. Curly hair is longer when it’s wet and shorter when it’s dry, so cutting it while it’s dry helps you avoid cutting off more than you mean to.
  • Use a pair of hair-cutting shears, not regular household scissors. This makes a big difference!
  • Work in small sections instead of trying to cut all of your hair at once.
  • Cut off less than you think you need to, just to start. You can always go back and trim more, but you can’t get length back once you’ve cut it!
  • Have a second person with you to help you make sure the cut is even from all angles.

When you go to cut your hair, try cutting at a diagonal, so the ends won’t be as blunt. Often, people cut straight blunt lines, but you don't want to have lines all over your haircut. You want a smooth transition between each layer. And always make sure you’re sitting up straight. Tilting your head too much can cause unnecessary tension, which will result in uneven cuts.
