Workarounds for sending money to yourself on Venmo
PDF download Download Article

Do you want to Venmo money to yourself? Are you wondering if it is possible to do so? Unfortunately, you cannot Venmo yourself. At least, a single Venmo account cannot Venmo itself. You can set up a separate Venmo account and exchange Venmos between the two, so long as both accounts are connected to a different external bank account. This wikiHow article has everything you need to know about the possibility of sending yourself a Venmo.

Sending Venmo Balance to Yourself

While you can't Venmo yourself using the same account, you can transfer funds to your balance from your bank by signing up for the Venmo debit card. Alternatively, you can create a second Venmo account and transfer funds between your two balances, but this is highly discouraged and could get you banned from Venmo.

Can you Venmo yourself?

  1. Venmo will not even detect your own username as an account eligible to receive funds. If you try to Venmo your own phone number or email address, you will see an error message that says You cannot pay yourself.
    • If you need to get money into your Venmo account, you have a few options:
      • If you have a Venmo debit card, you can transfer money from your bank account to your Venmo balance.[1]
    • You can create another Venmo account and transfer funds between the two. However, Venmo doesn't allow users to have multiple accounts, so this is risky—if you get caught, Venmo will delete both of your accounts.
    • You can also give cash to a friend or family member, and ask them to send it to your Venmo account.

Depositing Money Into Venmo

  1. If you already have a Venmo debit card, you can easily transfer money from your linked bank account to your Venmo balance. If you don't have a Venmo debit card, you can apply for one easily—just tap Cards at the bottom of Venmo, tap Sign up for the Venmo Debit Card, and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • The Venmo debit card also allows you to spend your Venmo balance at retailers, and even access your funds at ATMs.
    • It usually takes 5-7 business days to receive your Venmo card after applying.[2]
  2. You'll see this at the bottom of the app. This takes you to the Wallet tab of the Me page.
  3. This option is in the Balance tile in the Wallet tab.
    • Make sure your bank account is already connected to your Venmo account. Otherwise, you will not see the option to add funds.
  4. This is the first option.
  5. If you only have one bank account linked to Venmo, you'll see a confirmation screen. If you have multiple bank accounts, tap the default option and select a new one.
  6. This will be next to the amount. The following page will show a summary of your deposit, including its estimated arrival.
    • Keep in mind that this method is still not the equivalent of Venmoing yourself. It simply allows you to put funds that you already own toward your Venmo balance.

Using a Second Venmo Account

  1. If you want to transfer funds to yourself, you can create a second Venmo account connected to a different bank account. Keep in mind that Venmo does not allow anyone to have multiple accounts under any circumstances. If Venmo discovers you're operating more than one account, they will ban both accounts.
    • Because this method is so risky, consider simply Venmoing a trusted friend and asking them to Venmo the money back to you.
    • If you insist on going through with this method, we strongly encourage you to use an alias and maybe even a burner number for the second account.
  2. Sign in to one of your two accounts and send a Venmo to the other account.
    • You may want to sign into the other account (it helps to use two separate devices) and confirm that you have received the money.
    • If you only need to Venmo yourself once, consider deleting the second Venmo account after you are done.
